Life can feel like a series of never-ending, challenging
and often difficult circumstances.

It felt that way for Alex…

He was often anxious in social situations and felt isolated from friends.

Depression – not being able to shake the dark cloud – sometimes made him feel like a “human Eeyore”.

Entry Level Dissatisfaction

The English degree he spent four years working hard to earn just wasn’t given him the opportunities he hoped for.

Alex had an entry level job, but he wanted a real career. Dreamed of having a meaningful vocation that paid decent money.

He wanted to claim his piece of the American dream.

Challenges of Finding a Life Partner

There was also his recent, painful, breakup.

He wanted a partner—life had too much to offer for him to spend it alone. The thought of “getting back out there” and dating terrified him, so he avoided it like he did so many things.

Internal Conflicts

If you asked Alex, he would tell you he felt “okay” about himself. But, he wanted to feel about himself the way his closest friends felt about him – they loved him!

Alex was good at avoidance – he had some pain in his past, a lot of pain, and he never dealt with it.

When he was 10-years-old, his sister died after a long battle with a cancer. He felt alone, ashamed, powerless, and victimized. He hated feeling like that.

He wanted to feel good, to be empowered.

He wanted to embrace all life had to offer, but he didn’t know how.

Church and Family Stresses

He’d been raised in the church, but neither its people, nor its “rules for living”, made sense to him anymore.

During his freshman year of college, he stopped attending church. The conservative values, beliefs, and rules that he grew up with didn’t “fit” with his current world view and it made life confusing at times.

Alex felt like a “fish out of water” around his family.

Some of them had outright rejected him, because he no longer followed their rules. He felt judged and misunderstood, and he just didn’t know what to do.

Fears + Alcohol & Drugs

He had a lot of fear.

Fears about his life, fears about the direction in which society was moving, even fears about the condition of the planet. It sometimes kept him awake at night, worrying about all the things that felt out of his control.

To cope with his stress, anxiety, and depression, Alex started using alcohol, drugs, and even other people.

Life was becoming unmanageable and he wanted to change. He knew his choices weren’t healthy, but it was a daily struggle.

Alex was kind of a mess…until he reached out for help.

A Turnaround Moment

A friend at work told Alex about a therapist that helped him.

He learned he was not alone, and there was hope.

After several months at Parkside Psychotherapy, Alex began to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

He was given the information and skills he needed to heal from the pain of the past and change the behaviors he couldn’t change alone. He grew in ways he never even realized he needed to.

He learned how to cope with life in healthier, more
effective ways.

Alex’s life is still a series of seemingly never-ending, challenging, and often difficult circumstances. But, isn’t that just how life is?

Now he has the knowledge, insight, and skills to make it through those times.

In fact, he isn’t just surviving now, he is thriving!
